NURS 2230 Clinical for International Nurses

This course provides international students who commence the Bachelor of Nursing program in the second or third year with an orientation to the Australian health care context.  It also enables these students to develop language skills specific to the health workplace, provides for the application of specific, required clinical skills in Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control and enhances academic skills for their ongoing study in the program.

Oral and written clinical communication

Occupational Health and Safety

Infection Control

Patient Assessment and History taking

Literature search

Medication administration

Safe patient movement

Responding to medical emergencies

Aggression minimisation

 

NURS 3163 Sexuality & Families

Examines and analyses the concepts of sexuality and family and the multiple expressions of these concepts in contemporary society. Human reproduction is exploredas an infrequently encountered health state, while learning about the physiological changes involved with conception, pregnancy and birthing. The complex nature of working with a family when nursing a child who is ill is also examined.

 

Course Content:

NURS 3197 Emergency Nursing Therapeutics

Examines the concept of triage and the nursing response required in emergency situations including head injury, spinal injury, burns and mental health crisis, based on understanding the scientific basis of the underlying pathology. The ability to work independently and as a team member is especially important in this situation. Post traumatic stress is discussed in both client and self care contexts.

 

Course Content:

Head injury and raised intracranial pressure

Homeostasis; fluid & electrolyte balance;

Shock and fluid and electrolyte replacement and management

Blood, blood products and plasma expanders

Renal pathophysiology

Pharmacology of diuretics and steroids

Clinical Placement 2 weeks (64 hours)

 

NURS 3184 Prudence & Professional Nursing

Designed to prepare students for the transition to professional practice. Skills to implement the role of educator are developed. The concept of quality in health care and some of the processes used to promote quality in health care are addressed.

 

Course Content:

Principles of adult education

Skills for client teaching

Skills for mentoring colleagues

Developing a professional portfolio

Developing a Curriculum vitae

Quality processes in health care

NURS 3273 Transition to Professional Practice A

Provides students with a sustained period of clinical practice to enable them to prepare effectively for professional practice. This preparation involves working alongside a clinician and demonstrating increasing ability to provide care for a group of clients as an effective practitioner. An integral aspect of professional function is the ability to manage one's practice. Understanding the application of processes to achieve quality care is an integral aspect of professional practice.

 

Course Content:

Clinical placement:6 weeks x 3 days (144 hours) clinical placementin a unit selected by the student. Each student will choose a clinical focus and a professional focus from both group A and Group B


Clinical foci:rural, indigenous, mental health, community, aged care, medical, surgical, specialist unit. People who chose the University Department of Rural Health must select rural or indigenous health as one of their clinical foci


Professional foci:Select 1 focus from Group A and 1 from Group B.

Group A: Public health, including epidemiology; Health Education; Health Equity.

Group B: Management of personal practice; continuous quality improvement.

 

NURS 3274 Transition to Professional Practice B

Provides students with a sustained period of clinical practice to enable them to prepare effectively for professional practice. This preparation involves working alongside a clinician and demonstrating increasing ability to provide care for a group of clients as an effective practitioner.
